Astronomy lovers are anxiously anticipating Saturday! An annular solar eclipse is set for late morning on Oct. 14 in the Carson City area.

Jack C. Davis Observatory will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. for the public to enjoy safe viewing of the annular solar eclipse, which occurs when the Moon partially obstructs the Sun from the Earth. Without the proper glasses or telescope filters, it is unsafe to view the eclipse.

Volunteer(s) will be on hand at JCDO to provide telescope viewing of the eclipse.

鈥淭he weather forecast is a bit concerning with clouds as a real possibility,鈥� said JCDO Director Dr. Thomas Herring, who will be attending a viewing event in Elko, where the eclipse will be more pronounced. 鈥淲e do not have any spare eclipse glasses but can help people view through telescopes with proper filters.鈥�

JCDO is also scheduled to hold its weekly Star Party on Saturday from dusk to 11 p.m. The facility is located at 2269 Vanpatten Ave., just above 黑料网鈥檚 Carson City campus.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, JCDO will celebrate International Observe the Moon Night. Dr. Herring will deliver a presentation on "It's Lunacy 鈥� The Moon" at 7:30 p.m., with the evening鈥檚 festivities running from 6 to 11 p.m.
